Lucky Kitchen and Fundação de Serralves (Porto, Portugal)
Presença Series 001
Pauline Oliveros and Zeena Parkins

Lucky Kitchen was a legendary experimental sound publisher beginning in New York in the 1990’s, drawing to a close in Barcelona in the mid 2000’s. It has come back only for the purpose of working with Pedro Rocha and the excellent audio archive of live performances at the Fundação de Serralves.

The experimental sound program running at Porto’s Fundação de Serralves is one of the most expansive and important in Europe. It was with great pleasure that the curator of the program, Pedro Rocha, and artists Bergman & Salinas worked with the archive of the Serralves program to produce the Presença Series of 12” vinyl editions to highlight and preserve select recordings from the Serralves archive.

Beautiful split 12” audiophile vinyl, produced to highest standards at Handle With Care in Berlin. Cover art by artist Michelle Grabner (Whitney Biennial 2014 co-curator). Design by Remco Van Bladel, (designer for New World Summit, Witte de With Center for Contemporary Arts and the Dutch Pavillion at the Venice Biennale 2015.)

The 12″ vinyl contains the live audio recordings of composers Pauline Oliveros and Zeena Parkins.

Pauline Oliveros is a central figure in post-war experimental sound. She was a founding member of the San Francisco Tape Music Center and has devoted much of her life to composing and promoting what she termed “sonic awareness”. Among countless awards and honors, Oliveros represented the United States in Osaka Worlds Fair, and was in the 2014 Whitney Biennial.

Zeena Parkins is a central figure of improvised and experimental sound. She is a multi-instrumentalist/composer/improviser. Parkins is a pioneer of contemporary harp practice and performance, and she has also recorded or performed with musicians such as Björk, John Zorn, Elliott Sharp, Ikue Mori, Jim O’Rourke, Fred Frith, Pauline Oliveros, and Yoko Ono.
